COMP 301 - Assignments

There will be eight hand-written (pencil and paper) assignments worth a total of sixty per cent of the final grade. Assignments will generally be handed out on Thursdays and due the following Thursday at the beginning of class. The hope is that students will read the assignment and the corresponding reading from the book before Tuesdays class and raise questions relating to the assignment at that time. Immediately after being handed in, the problems from the assignment will be discussed in class. This means that the assignments must be handed in ON TIME. In order to facilitate individual scheduling problems, each student can decide to not hand in up to two assignments as the assignment grade will be based upon the best six assignments handed in. Despite this it is highly recommended that students hand in all assignments.

Policy on cooperation:

Students are encouraged to discuss the problems on the assignments and examine possible solutions with other students. Please take notice of two cardinal rules concerning such cooperation: 1) The final write up of the solutions to the problems should be the work of each individual student. It is unacceptable for two or more students to hand in word for word copies of solutions. 2) Any significant collaboration should be acknowledged (as for instance I acknowledge the help of M. Rice in developing this policy).
